For many, who did not know much about American banking and financial regulation, it came as a surprise to learn more about the Federal Reserve than most people knew about what became of the United States. As an economist, I do not hold to the pro-capitalism ideologies that have developed in the US during the past several decades. What I consider a legitimate corrective to their tendencies to steer a few members toward a more rigid monetary policy might be that in the financial system the elite are able and willing to regulate in ways that prevent future mistakes and risk. For me, those are less than optimal times to deal with this situation, given how much economic stability was supposed to happen in the 1980’s.
